Audioscapes

Audioscapes

How is it that we describe certain tones as full, hollow, sharp, and hard or round and soft? This is the field of audiovisualization. It is a widely used concept, not only in music videos, album covers, or stage shows but also in marketing and corporate design, where it serves as an accompaniment to sound. The goal of this work was to identify ways to translate the full communicative range of sounds into a self-sufficient visual language. Based on the insights gained, such a unique language was then developed—one capable of conveying the individual atmospheric and emotional impact of its musical counterpart. This language serves to make a targeted engagement with music more accessible and to foster the handling of intermedial concepts. It was applied to four example songs. Songs in order from top left to bottom right: Black (Pearl Jam), Paranoid Android (Radiohead), Goodbye (Toe), Schism (Tool)
